To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is written in support of the work carried out by the Bandaid Box Charitable Trust who has undertaken to provide ongoing aid, in the form of health care delivery, to the village of Kharikhola and the surrounding villages in the Khumbu area of East Nepal

Kharikhola is not on an area frequented by tourists and the majority of villagers are subsistence farmers.

As a volunteer who has traveled to Kharikhola to work as a registered nurse, I have been able to experience and understand the difficulty villagers have in accessing health care, when living in isolated areas that have no governmental health service. Most of us could not imagine being unable get healthcare when needed.

During the 14 day annual clinic in 2007, thousands of locals presented with a multitude of health issues requiring treatment by the doctors and nurses working there. This was the third annual clinic and interestingly many locals presented because they now understand that quality health care makes for improved outcomes enabling them to maintain healthier lifestyles. Others presented requiring emergency care, that, had it not been delivered may have meant loss of life.

The dental team was inundated with patients this year. It became obvious that what are required, are continued opportunities to provide preventative dental hygiene education particularly at school level. Trust funds make this possible.

Donations to the trust also provide ophthalmology services. It was miraculous to see the difference, surgical and optometry interventions made. These people were now able to contribute more fully to family life and feel valued again.

The fact that all the New Zealand medical team travels to and within Nepal at their own expense, means that funds raised from donations are used directly for the health care of Nepalese people in the Kharikhola area.

I sincerely hope that this letter enables you to make an informed decision regarding the work carried out by the Bandaid Box Trust.

Yours Sincerely Jenny Coulson NZ RGON
